“A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.”
Proverbs 6:10-11
Proverbs 6:10-11
One of the spiritual disciplines that I've tried to work into my life over time is reading a chapter in Proverbs that corresponds with the day of the month. It's convenient because it takes little mental strain to figure out what to read for the day since Proverbs has thirty-one chapters. Today, being the 6th of May, I was in the 6th chapter.
And the word ‘little’ in these verses really jumped out at me. It was a great reminder to watch out for the little compromises that in the moment don’t seem to matter too much. The wisdom of the proverb is that all the little compromises eventually add up, and before we know it, they can lead to a big mess.
But the opposite is true as well, a little hard work, a little diligence when it’s needed, a little obedience, a little more perseverance, a little gesture of kindness, a little smile towards a stranger, even a little boys little lunch put into the hands of Jesus, can all lead to huge positive results. At the end of the day we can never truly say, "It's no big deal, it's just a little...." fill in the blank. God cares about it all. Mind the little moments; they’re never really little.
Dear God, thank you for the reminder that the little, seemingly insignificant moments and choices of my day, really do matter. Help me by your Spirit, to mind the little moments, and to entrust all my moment-by-moment decisions into your good plan and care. Amen
