Another Lap

Remember the word that you commanded your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples, but if you return to me and keep my commandments and do them, though your outcasts are in the uttermost parts of heaven, from there I will gather them and bring them to the place that I have chosen, to make my name dwell there.’ They are your servants and your people, whom you have redeemed by your great power and by your strong hand.
Nehemiah 1:8-10
When I was a kid, a singer by the name of Dan Whittemore gave concerts at our church. Some of the songs stuck in my mind and heart and one of them was called, “Walkin’ Sinai” written by Alfred Poirier in 1974. The chorus was, “'Go on and take another lap around Mount Sinai, til you've learned your lesson, Til you stop your whining and you quit your rebellin', Til you learn to stand in your day of testing, by trustin' and obeyin' the Lord.”

Many times God wants to teach us deep lessons of the heart and like Jonah, Jacob, David, Peter and countless other people we run from where God wants us and think our path is taking us away from him, but God is patiently guiding us to learn to trust and then obey the sound of his voice. He brings us back around like this spiral our family and some friends made recently at the beach.

Is God trying to teach you something? Are you listening? Has he brought you to a deeper moment of learning and trusting? Be quick to trust and quick to obey as you continue on the adventure of faith. May God continue to build your faith and expand your influence into others lives for his name’s sake.

Father,
Thank you for the journey of faith that turns and twists in unexpected ways. Thank you for your patience and guidance even when we can’t see it and even when we are rebelling against it. Your forgiveness and grace is what we always need. Help us to grow to trust and obey you more and more, so that others might come to trust you too. In Jesus’ name, Amen
