A Godly Aspiration

But you know Timothy’s proven worth, how as a son with a father he has served with me in the gospel. I hope therefore to send him just as soon as I see how it will go with me, and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also.
Philippians 2:22-24

Who prays for you? Who encourages you to be more faithful to God? Who can you go to with your questions, doubts, and uncensored thoughts?
I have been privileged to be taught, supported, and encouraged by a whole cadre of mentors, teachers, and guides. I have had spiritual fathers, mothers, aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers. These godly men and women continue to be a well of wisdom and above all, point me to Jesus.

Paul’s warmth towards the Philippians, as partners in the gospel, is like that of a father. He calls them “beloved”. He takes his role as a spiritual example and mentor seriously as he prepares to send his surrogate, Timothy, who is like a son to him.
He is like son in that he has the same heart and intention as Paul. When he comes they will know that Timothy will love, teach, and guide them in the same manner as Paul. This depth of relationship is the unique gift of Christ-centered love in the church.

Today, give thanks for those who nurtured you in faith and look for opportunities and relationships to nurture and encourage others to more love, faithfulness, and gospel witness. Even if you never had much of this support in your life, you can learn from Paul’s example and ask God to fit you for service as a spiritual father or mother for others. This is a godly aspiration I hope more of us will pursue.

Our God,
We often feel inadequate because of our imperfections and failures, but you can use all of us to point people to Jesus. Use our experiences, our time with you, and your word to shape us into the type of people who can be spiritual fathers, mothers, aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers to other. Build your church and help us to keep the glory of Jesus and the proclamation of his most excellent way at the core of our life and relationships. This is our godly aspiration. Amen
