Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.
Philippians 2:14-16
How are things progressing for you in your life with Jesus?
Paul’s desire to continue serving faithfully on earth was for the Philippians “progress and joy in the faith.” His expectation and goal was for their growth and progress in faith.
He is speaking about character transformation through the truth of the gospel and the power of the Holy Spirit to enable them to stand up to external persecution and community discord. This strength of faith is exactly what Paul is hoping for them and it is his hope and love for them that drives him to persevere on their behalf.
This must impact our lives!
We are living in a crooked and twisted generation that can only be helped by people who are different. Paul describes it as being like lights shining in the darkness. We humbly hold on to the word of life, considering how Jesus would navigate the complexities of economics, social structures, familial relationships, and politics. This is most critical in the decision making, interactions, and relationships we cultivate amongst ourselves as Christians.
While we are not perfect, we surrender our disagreements and work together in the humble and strong way of Jesus. We are not push-overs, but same-minders who allow God’s word and Spirit to unite and guide us toward progress in the faith and life entrusted to us in the story of forgiveness and hope through Jesus.
Is living to shine light in your life with others your focus and priority? Let’s be praying for the Holy Spirits to work in our midst to bring the progress of life with Jesus into each of our lives.
Our God,
It is your work amongst us to rescue, redeem, and renew that makes us sing. Help us to love the world you made enough to seek how to best shine out with the truth of the gospel and the way of righteousness. We pray for a transformative work in us that will cause us to humbly serve one another and bless our community. Awaken us from our slumber and fit us for service in your kingdom. We want the progress you have in mind for us today and everyday. Amen
