On the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.
John 7:37-38
“You’re Welcome.” What a common phrase, but it takes on deep spiritual meaning when it comes from Jesus.
This is a key passage where Jesus declares that he is the source of what gives us real life. Believing in him leads to the Spirit of God quenching our spiritual thirst with with his life-giving presence.
In essence Jesus proclaims, “You’re Welcome!” There are no quotas, no racial profiles, and no annual income checks. He does not care what clubs you’ve belonged to, how many community service hours you’ve put in, or what grades you are getting. He does not stop to see if you excel in music, art, communication or athletics. He does not check to see if you have a close family or influential friends. He says, I have what your soul needs and you’re welcome to it.
As a church it is important that we remind each other of the welcome of Jesus. The other thing we absolutely must remember is that we are to love as Jesus loves. Notice he says, that our hearts will flow with the same living water that Jesus gives.
Are you living a life that says, “You’re Welcome” or a life that says, “You’re Welcome IF…”? This is an evil “IF” because it is the lie of a prejudiced and judgmental heart. We all come to Christ with parched, cracked, and blistered hearts. May all that we do as a church be a reflection of Jesus word, “come”. Remember the truth for you and the truth to share, You’re welcome!
Father,
We thank you for the radical welcome of Jesus who provides what our souls need. We ask for our lives to overflow with the same love and life that you have given to us. We praise you that you have forgiven and redeemed us to be people of living water. Fill our souls this day and help us to be a life-giving church. Amen
