“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven."
Matthew 6:1
Hidden ministry.
These are the things that get done in God’s church without celebration or fanfare. There are a variety of hidden ministries that exhibit Christ’s love. Maybe some of you have participated in or been recipients of these simple acts.
Flowers and cards are sent to the grieving to let them know their church family loves, supports, and remembers them in their loss. People come early or stay late to make events special for all those who attend. Meals are dropped off for those who are ill or could use a little breathing room. Financial gifts are given anonymously when there are needs. There are a thousand different ways people minister and serve others in our midst. Many of these hidden acts of kindness are not a part of a structured program and would make people blush if their names were mentioned. They do it out of love and a care that comes from Jesus.
This kind of grace-filled service is what the church should be about. This care and concern shows a genuine love for each other and reflects a genuine love for Christ. Sometimes great things are done through simple acts of love stacked on top of one another. Nothing should keep us from serving in these simple but effective ways.
Let’s look for hidden ministry opportunities this coming week. While people may not know who has helped, people will see Jesus in the way that we love and take care of each other.
Our Good God,
Help us to be open about our love and dependence on you. Help us to be humble, not seeking recognition, when we use our gifts to serve other. May your name and the strength of your church be recognized in our hidden ministry. Give us opportunities today to serve in this way, we ask in Jesus’s name, Amen
