By Pastor Kevin
Yes, and I will continue to rejoice, for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance. I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
Philippians 1:18b-20
Paul is emphatic about rejoicing. It is his true eagerness and happiness to see the message of Jesus preached. He is encouraged by the Philippians’ prayers and the Holy Spirit strengthening him to face imprisonment, trial, and even death.
As Christians, who do we identify most with in our lives?
It seems like Paul, by God’s Spirit, expects that he will courageously live as a faithful friend of Jesus. Whatever he has to go through he is willing and finds joy to be of service. Death does not overwhelm him, because he knows Jesus has conquered death. What matters is that the gospel goes out to be heard and to change lives.
No matter what your situation right now, remember what heights Jesus was raised to on the cross. The grandeur of his loving sacrifice for you, when we think about it again and again, leads to thanksgiving and great joy in our hearts. This commitment to seeing the Savior’s reputation, work, and name exalted in life is our joy. This is why we share the good news!
God of Joy and Jubilation,
May we find the same delight in you that you find in us as your people. Thank you that it was the joy Jesus knew he would experience at our salvation that drove him to the scorn of the cross. May we take upon ourselves body and soul whatever you might ask, so that others may receive this joyful gift as well. Let your gospel grow in our lives to eclipse our fears so that Christ will be exalted in our bodies.
Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee, Amen
