Christianity Explored: Praise & Prayer

We thank God for the fine meetings on February 7 and 14. Thanks to all who are small group leaders, and on the hospitality, prayer support, and food prep/serving teams. It is so wonderful to have all of you helping in the Body of Christ. People are welcome to come for the first time on February 21. Due to busy schedules we know some could not make the first meetings, so be sure to encourage those you’ve invited to come this Tuesday at 6:30 pm. Please keep praying that God will continue to work in the hearts of those attending as they read this week through their lesson in the Gospel of Mark. Also pray for wisdom for the small group leaders as they follow up with discussion topics. We need extra help each week with clean-up in the kitchen from 7:00 to 8:30 pm. If you can volunteer for just one night to help us, please sign up on the clipboard down-stairs in the Fellowship Foyer. Can you join our prayer team? Brothers and sisters, we need you to be praying for each meeting. Please sign up downstairs. God is at work. Let’s praise Him and give Him all the glory for all He is doing in our midst.

Missions Update

Please pray for Mission Chad and for the schools and programs it runs in this impoverished country (#7 on the UN’s list of poorest in the world). Ask God for the provision of food as the last harvest was bad and there is famine. Praise God for the completion of the high school building in the orphan school; completing the school from kindergarten through high school. Praise also for a door-to-door evangelistic campaign that took place November 25-27 and resulted in 4250 people coming to the Lord!

Adult & College SS Classes Begin February 26

Work and Faith: Ministry Center Room 21 Facilitators: Ariana and Sean McDonough

In this class we will explore both the theology and practice of Christians in the workplace. Topics will include: the meaning and value of “secular” work, the futility of work in a fallen world, relationships in the workplace, a Christian work ethic, work/life balance, and sharing your faith at work. For a head-start, read articles at www.theologyofwork.org.

Chores, Consequences & Community Living and Teaching Adults to Lead Their Kids: MC Room 23 Facilitators: Pam Heintz and Freddie Jones

This two-part class will focus first on the role kids play in the family as they live in community. Parents will look at how to shape the mindset of their very young children (or recalibrate the thinking of older children) toward an appreciation of community living and how vital a role they play. The second part of this class will focus on how parents can have open, honest, and theologically rich conversations with their children about sex, and learn practical ways of engaging kids in conversations and thinking through how God intended His good gift of sex to be used.

The Person of Jesus Study: Ministry Center Rm 22 Facilitators: Robert Tansill and Jason Schrock

Many Christians are so aware of Jesus’ divinity that they have forgotten He is a person. Reintroducing people to their first love through an interactive method of Bible study, this class invites you into the crowd that followed Jesus. See firsthand Jesus’ compassion to the widow of Nain, His honesty towards Simon the Pharisee, and how He loves a woman with a reputation.

Men’s Class – Study of Costly Grace: MC Café Facilitator: David Rox

Men, join us for a challenging look at Jon Walker’s new book, which is a contemporary look at the classic work by Dietrich Bonhoeffer, The Cost of Discipleship. Grace is a central theme of our faith, but it is greatly misunderstood. Grace does not allow for “flabby faith.” Come and learn more of what it means to follow Jesus wholeheartedly!

College Class: Gospel of John: WC House Living Rm Facilitator: David Horn (WC House Living Room)

All college-aged students are welcome to join us for breakfast refreshments followed by our study. We are working our way through the Gospel of John.

Missions Update

Pray for Carl and Ursula Williams serving with Wycliffe in Benin, African. Wycliffe developed materials for a literacy project and has trained local teachers in the small villages to use them. However, this program was derailed when a non-governmental organization hired all the teachers to take part in a new government-sponsored literacy program, and they need to use Wycliffe’s materials to teach in the local languages. Please pray that everyone will work together for the good of the people who wish to learn to read in their own language. Also pray that Ursula, a German citizen, will be able to obtain a visa.

Adult Sunday School Classes

Beginning January 8 through February 12

•Christian Perspectives on Current Political Issues — Teacher: Steve Jamison (MC Rm 21) This class will attempt to apply principles derived from the Bible to current political and economic issues. After developing the foundational concepts, we will then relate them to present day election year issues in a discussion format. Political involvement is not an option, but rather a responsibility for the Christian living in the U.S.

•The Divine Conspiracy — Teachers: Robert Tansill and Michael Armentrout (MC Rm 22) Based on Dallas Willard’s book, this life-changing class will seek to capture the core of Christ’s teachings on the Sermon on the Mount in a fresh, relevant, and revealing way. It will also call Christians into a more authentic faith and then offer a practical plan by which we can answer the call. Topics will include: (1) The Divine Conspiracy, (2) The Path to a Blessed Life, (3) Becoming a Good Person, (4) Treasuring What Matters Most, (5) Becoming a Community of Prayerful Love, and (6) Living as a Disciple of Jesus.

•Gospel Is Life —Teacher: Eliot Fay (MC Rm 23/24) Utilizing Tim Keller’s DVD series, “The Gospel in Life”, the purpose of this class is to discover afresh the gospel and the ways to live it out in your everyday life. From exploring the world you live in now to preparing for the world that is to come, you will learn how the gospel can change your heart, your community, and how you live in the world.

•Men’s Class – Continuation of a Study in the Book of Revelation — Teacher: David Rox (Café) Join us as we continue studying the Apocalypse of John, one of the most talked about and misunder-stood of New Testament books. We will continue to wrestle with understanding the type of literature it is, understanding to whom it was written and why, and focusing on its central message that Christ is both Lord of the church and Lord of history, in spite of our circumstances.

North Shore Christian Men’s Concert

On Sunday, January 29, at 6:00 pm, the North Shore Christian Men’s Choir will present a Concert of Faith in the Sanctuary. Many men in our church sing in this choir which was established 14 years ago right here at FCCH, and many of you have been faithful in praying for the choir as they sing each year in prisons, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, the Topsfield Fair, the Rockport Christmas Festival, and at local churches. Come and let’s praise God together as we hear in song and in word what He has been doing and how your prayers have been answered. A freewill offering will be taken to help cover the cost of the choirs’ ministry trips.

Christianity Explored

All-Church Prayer Meeting: January 24 Join us for an all-church prayer meeting in the WC Living Room on Tuesday, January 24, at 7:00 pm.
Now is the time to ask God to use our church family to share the Good News and bring the love of Christ to our community. Please pray: ▶ That those being asked to attend the sessions will be open to learn more about who Jesus is and how they can develop a personal relationship with Him ▶ For the leaders who will be guiding the small group discussions ▶ For meals to be a time of friendship and welcoming newcomers to our meeting. We need to depend on God and ask for His direction, power, and enabling in every aspect of the program and in all that we do.

Christianity Explored Begins February 7 Our all-church outreach to the community will begin Tuesday, February 7. Please stop by our table in the Fellowship Foyer today to look over the course materials, and to pick up invitation postcards to give to your friends, neighbors, and colleagues. Also please take some posters to post in local stores, libraries, and churches. The program will include a weekly dinner, a short video, and small group discussion. You can sign up to help with set-up, meal prep, publicity, hospitality, welcoming center, prayer team, and small group leaders (small group leaders will need to attend a training session on either January 28 or February 4 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm). We expect 60 to 80 people each week, so for meal planning if you plan to attend please sign the attendance roster and include the names of people you’ve invited and expect to come.

Adult Sunday School Classes

Beginning January 8 through February 12

Christian Perspectives on Current Political Issues — Teacher: Steve Jamison (MC Rm 21) This class will attempt to apply principles derived from the Bible to current political and economic issues. After developing the foundational concepts, we will then relate them to present day election year issues in a discussion format. Political involvement is not an option, but rather a responsibility for the Christian living in the U.S.

The Divine Conspiracy — Teachers: Robert Tansill and Michael Armentrout (MC Rm 22) Based on Dallas Willard’s book, this life-changing class will seek to capture the core of Christ’s teachings on the Sermon on the Mount in a fresh, relevant, and revealing way.

Gospel Is Life —Teacher: Eliot Fay (MC Rm 23/24) Utilizing Tim Keller’s DVD series, “The Gospel in Life”, the purpose of this class is to discover afresh the gospel and the ways to live it out in your everyday life. From exploring the world you live in now to preparing for the world that is to come, you will learn how the gospel can change your heart, your community, and how you live in the world.

Men’s Class – Continuation of a Study in the Book of Revelation — Teacher: David Rox (Café) Join us as we continue studying the Apocalypse of John, one of the most talked about and misunder-stood of New Testament books. We will continue to wrestle with understanding the type of literature it is, understanding to whom it was written and why, and focusing on its central message that Christ is both Lord of the church and Lord of history, in spite of our circumstances.
